Programme Objectives

The fundamental purpose of People & Place is to put young people at the heart of projects taking place across England.  The programme aims to create opportunities for long-term engagement with young people and, through this, embed organisational change within museums, galleries and archives.  It is hoped that by strengthening the opportunities for groups of young people to participate in museum activity, cultural organisations will be able to better ‘connect’ with this often under-represented audience.

But while the inclusion of opportunities for young people is the main outward goal of the People & Place programme, there are also expectations for the museums themselves.  In this respect, one of the key aims of the programme is to use projects with young people to increase collaborative work between the British Museum and six partner institutions.  It is therefore hoped that this youth-focused work will increase and strengthen partnership work amongst partner institutions and furthermore aim to include organisations from beyond the museum sector, all the while facilitating the sharing of knowledge and expertise.
