Chinese New Year Project

Chinese New Year Project

Bristol City Museum and Gallery have been working with a group of 10 young people aged 13 to 15 from across the city.

We have asked the young people to create an artwork and film inspired by Chinese objects, culture and New Year, combined with their own personal take on life. The young people have been looking at Chinese Culture throughout time through the collections of Bristol City Museum and the British Museum.

As part of this they have taken part in Chinese New Year celebrations. They have looked at how the themes and symbolism of these objects, cultures and events have similarities to important aspects of their own lives. Based on this, they are making a huge ornamental Chinese tiger, which they will bring to life to tell the story of their own lives!

The film they produce will feature in Bristol’s new museum, Mshed.

About the venue - Bristol’s Museums, Galleries & Archives

Venue name

Bristol Museum, Galleries and Archives currently runs five sites in the city, and will soon be opening a sixth site, M Shed. M Shed will explore the city’s history from prehistoric times to the 21st century. Stories about the city and its people have been discovered through working with experts and communities across the city – a process that will continue for the life of the museum. Rich collections of objects, art and archives will also play an important part in bringing those stories to life.
