Changing Lives

Changing Lives

This project is working with a group of year nine students who will have significant input into an exhibition of objects from Jiangsu province in China which will be displayed in Colchester Castle in 2012.

The participants were selected through an ”Apprentice” style audition process, demonstrating their interests and skills including making a film about the history of Colchester Castle.

The final group are exploring different aspects of Chinese culture and history, discussing with the curators the possible exhibition themes and how they wish opinions to be reflected in the display. They are doing this by attending after school sessions and are also working towards a Bronze Arts Award. As part of the Olympic Open Weekend July 2011 they will be leading on a family arts event at Hollytrees Museum and this will form part of the Arts Award.

They have travelled to China in February 2011 to help the curators select the objects and experience the Chinese culture. They visited Bejing, Shanghai and Nanjing. They have also made a film capturing their experiences in China.

This project will form part of Colchester and Ipswich Museums’ Eastern Exchanges project as part of the Cultural Olympiad’s Stories of the World programme.
