Conner’s Wall Plaster
Conner Scrimshaw chose several pieces of Roman wall plaster, pictured above, as his objects. From the museums MODES record he was able to discover that they were found in Brough, which is about 5 miles north of Newark. The Romans knew it as the small town of Crococolana. Walls of the richer houses in a town, such as Brough, would have been plastered or covered with mosaics. If the walls were plastered they would have been painted in bright colours, such as red, yellow, blue and green. There may have been geometric borders with agriculture, hunting or mythological scenes depicted or simple foliage. Today we still often paint our walls as an alternative to wallpaper. Conner chose these objects because he liked the colours and can imagine walls being painted like this today.
