Eathan’s Seal box
Eathan Parr chose this seal box, pictured above, as his object. From the museums MODES record he was able to discover that it was found in Brough, which is about 5 miles north of Newark. The Romans knew it as the small town of Crococolana. The box is a diamond shaped two-piece bronze seal box decorated with red, blue and green enamel. These were used as a simple form of security when sending written messages or packages. The underside of the box was fixed to the package either by nails or by a cord passed through the holes in the bottom. The cord would have been tied in a knot inside the seal box and held in place by wax stamped with a seal, possibly from a ring intaglio. It would then have been impossible to remove the cord without breaking the seal. Seal boxes like this were only used during the 1st and 2nd century AD. Eathan chose this object because he liked the shape and the fact that it was used to send messages to people.
