Georgina’s Grey Ware Flagon

Georgina’s Grey Ware Flagon

Georgina Clay chose this grey ware flagon as her object. From MODES she was able to discover that it was found in Brough, which is about 5 miles north of Newark.  The Romans knew it as the small town of Crococolana.  It is described as a flagon or jar of very coarse clay, pear shaped with thick undercut rim.  A flagon such as this would have been used for holding wine or possibly garum.  Garum was a type of fermented fish sauce condiment that was an essential flavouring in cooking.  It was made by crushing and fermenting in brine the guts of various fishes such as mackerel, tuna and eels.  It was used in all sorts of dishes including desserts.  Georgina chose this object because it is the most complete of all the pottery from Brough.  This makes it much easier to work out what it might have been used for.
