Kyle’s Stylus
Kyle Wright chose this iron stylus, pictured above, as his object. From the museums MODES record he was able to discover that it was found in Brough, which is about 5 miles north of Newark. The Romans knew it as the small town of Crococolana. The iron stylus is a writing implement, 9.4cm long, with one pointed end for writing in wax and one flat end for pressing out mistakes. A message would have been written onto a wax filled recess in a block of wood. The bottom block would have had a lid attached possibly secured with two leather thongs passed through holes drilled into the sides of each block. Kyle chose this object because he liked its shape and could see the similarities with those used on digital devices today.
