Mercedes’ Oval Brooch
Mercedes Meanwell chose this oval brooch, pictured above, as her object. From the museums MODES record she was able to discover that it was found in Brough, which is about 5 miles north of Newark. The Romans knew it as the small town of Crococolana. The oval disc brooch is made from gilt bronze with the central stone and pin missing. These types of brooches would have been owned by a fairly rich person. The small pin and limited space between the pin and the back of the brooch indicate that they would have been used to secure fine, therefore expensive, fabrics. Mercedes chose this object because of its shape and can imagine it still being worn today.
