Reuben’s Knife Blade
Reuben Lowe chose this iron knife blade, pictured above, as his object. From the museums MODES record he was able to discover that it was found in Brough, which is about 5 miles north of Newark. The blade is 13.5 cm long. It has been treated and lacquered for preservation. This knife is much longer and thinner than some of the other knife blades in the Roman collection. It probably had a wooden handle and would have been used in the kitchen for food preparation, maybe filleting, rather than for eating with. Reuben chose this object because he could tell what it was, due to its relatively good condition. He thought it would have been very sharp when it was in use in the kitchen.
