Cameron’s BM visit report and art work
On 23rd February 2010 8 students & 3 staff from Orchard School plus 3 museum service staff visited the British Museum. The following is Cameron’s memories of the visit:
We arrived at Newark Northgate Station at 10.06. When the train came we got on it and arrived at London Kings Cross Station at 11.30. After we had all met up we walked from London Kings Cross to the British Museum. My first impression of the museum was that it looked big. When we finally got into the museum we took our bags to a highly secure room. After a quick tour of the museum we went to the Egyptian galleries, where the mummies, treasures and hieroglyphs were all stored for show. After lunch we split up into two groups. I went to the stores and looked at the objects such as stone, metal, bone, ivory and leather. The other group went into the galleries where they keep the mosaics, oil lamps, coins, knifes and amphorae. Some other rooms had statues of emperors, such as Hadrian, models of Roman forts, bowls, kitchen equipment and silver ware. In the handling session we could hold coins, beads, brooches, a wax tablet and a silver plate. When we went back to the room we had a cup of tea, then a look around, before walking back to the station, where me, Brandon, Gary, Cynth and Chris went to McDonalds. We got on the train at 7.03 and got back to Newark station at 8.25.
As well as the mosaic and Roman pot making workshops in which the students participated, most of the students have produced a drawing of their chosen object. This is Cameron’s drawing of the knife:
