Charlotte’s Face Pot
Charlotte Parker chose this fragment of a face pot for her object. From MODES Charlotte has been able to discover that this is only 2 sherd’s of a face pot, glued together and showing the eye, nose and part of the beard. What it is unable to tell us is where it was found. Through further research Charlotte has been able to discover that these pots were not made in moulds, but started as a normal pot with clay added or taken away to form a nose, eye brows or bristles. They are known throughout the empire and their appearance in areas is linked with the movements of the Roman army, although civilian settlements also appear to have adopted them. Although their purpose is not entirely clear, their use as holders of cremated remains associates them with death and burial. Possibly the face was that of the deceased? They also appear to have been used in religious contexts and for ordinary domestic use. Charlotte chose this object because she liked the face.
