Helen’s BM visit report and art work

On 23rd February 2010 8 students & 3 staff from Orchard School plus 3 museum service staff visited the British Museum.  The following is Helen’s memories of the visit:

We got to Newark Northgate Station at 1006. We arrived at Kings Cross at 1130. We saw Platform 9 ¾ then we walked to the British Museum.  We got there at 1200.  I couldn’t believe how big it was.  We met someone called Maria and took our bags to a room.  We had a quick tour of the museum.  We went to the Egyptian galleries and saw mummies, treasures and hieroglyphics.  After that we went to the library, and then we had lunch.  After lunch we split into two groups.  Group one went into the store to look at and pick up some objects.  There were stones, metal, bones, ivory and leather.  Group two went into the Roman galleries.  There were mosaics, oil lamps, coins, knives, amphorae, statues of emperors, a model of a Roman fort, pottery, bowls, kitchen equipment and silver ware.  There was a handling session, where there were coins, a brooch, statues, wax tablets and a silver plate.  Then we went back to the room we had lunch in to have a cup of tea.  We had a last look round then went back to the station via St Pancras to get some food.  We got back on the train at 7.03 and got back to Newark at 8.25.  We were all tired and ready to go home to bed.

As well as the mosaic and Roman pot making workshops in which the students participated, most of the students have produced a drawing of their chosen object.  This is Helen’s drawing of the mosaic:
