Jamie’s Jet Bangle
Jamie Keenaghan chose this jet bangle as his object. From MODES Jamie has been able to discover that it was found at the Roman villa site of Norton Disney, which is about 8 miles from Newark just across the county border in Lincolnshire. He has also been able to find out that it is made of jet and due to it’s size (Oval 5.8 x 6.2 cm) was probably made for a child. Although it is in a fair condition there is a small section missing. Through further research Jamie found out that jet, in it’s natural state, is only found around the Whitby area of North Yorkshire and that the jet was possibly made into a bangle in workshops in York (Eboracum). Norton Disney was a fairly large villa site, which was in use from the end of the first century AD until the middle of the fourth century AD. The people who lived there would have been fairly rich for their time, as shown by the mosaic floors and silver objects, such as the ear pick chosen by Steven. Jamie was able to see a similar bangle during his visit to the British Museum.
Jamie chose the bangle because it reminded him of his baby sisters christening bracelet.
