Jess’s BM visit report and art work
On 23rd February 2010 8 students & 3 staff from Orchard School plus 3 museum service staff visited the British Museum. The following is Jess’s memories of the visit:
We left school at 9.30am and walked down to Newark Northgate Station. We got on the train at 10.06 and travelled down to London’s Kings Cross Station. Then we walked to the British Museum and arrived there at 12.00. We saw some big buildings and a huge hall. Then we went to the Great Court. We met Maria, who gave us a quick tour before we had our lunch. Before lunch we looked round the Egyptian galleries. We saw lots of mummies, treasures and hieroglyphics. Then we saw the library before we took our bags to a big room and ate our lunch. After lunch we split into two groups. Some of us went to see the Roman galleries. We saw mosaics and some oil lamps. We also looked at some coins and statues, including one of Emperor Hadrian. We saw a model of a Roman fort, some pottery, bowls and also other Roman kitchen equipment. We went to the handling session, where we could handle some coins, beads, brooches and some statuettes. Then we went back to our room and had a cup of tea, before we went back to Kings Cross Station. We arrived back at the station at 8.25.
As well as the mosaic and Roman pot making workshops in which the students participated, most of the students have produced a drawing of their chosen object. This is Jess’s drawing of the mosaic:
