Roman Identity Project with Caldew School
Tullie House has also linked up with Caldew Secondary School in Dalston, London, who are studying the Romans.
In November 2009, Tullie House hosted 180 Year 7 students who explored the idea of history and identity. The young people were introduced to the idea of what it was to be British. They compared current objects from a member of staff and objects from a Roman person and explored the identity of the area in which they live and the stories attached with the Border Reivers, the current diverse population within Carlisle and Roman objects that portray a local story.
This has been followed up in school with lessons in citizenship and Roman history and it is hoped to hold a Roman object handling session with all six classes in Year 7. On 19 March 2010, the whole of Year 7 visit the British Museum to find out more about the Roman collections at the museum and hopefully choose an object which will eventually return to Tullie House.
