2010 – 2011

Wallsend Logo Project

Five year 8 students over two weeks (7-18 June 2010) designed a new logo for the Wallsend Chamber of Trade. They were taught about the history and the ‘identity’ of Wallsend and then asked to draw images of what they associate with Wallsend, which was then put together digitally to provide the Chamber with a new logo to be used on their letter heads.

 Hadrian Identity sessions

Hadrian Identity sessions were delivered at Burnside Business and Enterprise College as part of their enrichment week for Year 7 and 8s from 5 – 9 July 2010, looking at Hadrian’s identity in comparison to modern day celebrities. We discussed image and how it can be manipulated and the pupils designed and made a structure to mark the end of Hadrian’s wall using card or clay. They then designed flyers to promote the opening of the structure using an image of Hadrian but in a modern day environment.

Hadrian’s Column Project

The Hadrian Identity Column Project involved staff from Segedunum, an artist and twelve students from year 9 and 10 from Burnside Business and Enterprise College during the Summer Holidays 2010 and in February Half Term 2011. It was seen as learning based work experience for the young people in order to develop their skills and to enhance any college or sixth form applications.

The task was to paint 12 murals depicting images of Hadrian’s life on the inside wall of the tower of the museum. The idea for the project was taken from Trajan’s Column in Rome which commemorates Emperor Trajan’s victory in the Dacian Wars.

The week began with a brief introduction about the museum and an ice breaker. The young people were then given the background information to what they were going to do including information about Hadrian’s life, the murals and the museum itself. The second day began with the young people practising their tracing and painting skills before making a start on the murals themselves. The rest of the week was taken up with painting the murals and completing a diary of their accomplishments.

The end result was some really well painted and impressive murals of Hadrian’s life.
